Flora and the Penguin

Idle, M. (2014). Flora and the Penguin. San Francisco, California: Chronicle Books LLC.

This time around, Flora is the one responsible for causing the trouble in the  companion to the 2014 Caldecott Honor book, Flora and the Flamingo. The unlikely friendship between Flora and her new ice skating pal is explored as they glide, spin and dance together in this wordless picture book with unique horizontal flaps. We see them becoming friends, unwinding apart and making amends.

The colour scheme is completed in delicate, muted pale blues, mimicking an icy landscape. Softly curving lines follow us everywhere. The clever use of flaps change the space, denoting movement and speed and permitting the two friends to skate around the pages. As well, the fish at the bottom of each page instill a sense of movement and guide the reader’s eye as they mimic Flora and the penguin. A carefree, salient pop of yellow of Flora’s hat appears on each page.
